Distribution of publication in augmented reality
Distribution of augmented reality research by country
Where are the hottest places of augmented reality research (AR)? What countries are currently exploring AR? AR research consists of many aspects such as tracking, interaction, rendering, usability, applications and many more. Every year, academia and companies gather and discuss the novelty of the next AR technology. One of the conference of AR is International Symposium of Mixed and Augmented Reality (ISMAR). The map above shows the location of contributors of academic papers published at ISMAR from 2002 to 2013. The following chart also shows the top countries that publish papers at ISMAR. The numbers are extracted from IEEE Explore that include main papers and posters.

Top countries that dominate ISMAR
The U.S. is the top contributor of the conference. Research labs such as Microsoft Research, Nokia, Honda, Qualcomm, and Intel publish their research frequently. Companies such as Metaio, Canon, Toshiba, Siemens, BBC, Volkswagen also participate in ISMAR. We can guess where they are from. Lastly, the major contributors are from university labs such as MIT, University of Tokyo, TUM, TUGraz, NAIST, NUS, and many more. Monitor these reputable institutions for knowing what's next in AR technology.
